Today, around 17.5 million Egyptians are expected to head to polling stations to cast their votes for the first round of elections for the People's Assembly, the lower house of Egypt's bicameral parliament. Nine Egyptian governorates are voting today: Cairo, Alexandira, Damietta, Kafr el-Sheikh, Fayoum, Luxor, Portsaid, Asiut and Red Sea. It is Egypt's first election since a popular uprising toppled three-decade president Hosni Mubarak and his regime from power earlier this year. The world now draws its attention toward Egypt to watch the electoral process and to see the first real results of the January 25 Revolution that captivated the globe. The world considers the Egyptian parliamentary elections a real step towards democracy and freedom. Arabs continue the new experience of democracy after the success of the first experience of Tunisia. Many new parties are competing on lists and individual seats, including for the first time Islamic trends' parties, such as the Freedom and Justice, al-Nour and other Islamic parties.
