BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian state TV is showing thousands gathered in a Damascus square in a show of support for President Bashar Assad ahead of a visit by senior Arab officials. The Arab ministerial committee led by Qatar's prime minister is expected to arrive Wednesday to discuss the possibility of a national dialogue between the opposition and Assad's regime. Opposition groups refuse any dialogue with the regime, particularly while it continues its military crackdown on protesters. The U.N. says the crackdown has already killed 3,000 people. The demonstrators at Omayyad Square are carrying Syrian flags and Assad posters. The opposition accuses authorities of regularly staging massive rallies in support for the embattled leader even as his regime becomes increasingly isolated.
