CAIRO: Thousands of police officers organized a protest outside the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior on October 24 to demand purging of the ministry of corrupt agents of the former minister Habib al-Adly. The protesters demanded the abolition of military trials of police and the application of an incentive reward of 200 percent on the basic salary, including payment of transportation allowance or issuance a public transport authority card. They also demand determining working hours and the provision of education on the law so officers know their rights and duties. Police officer Ahmed Mahmoud said one former Minister of Interior, Mahmoud Wagdy, promised to meet their demands regarding the payments but he was dismissed before he applying them and Mansour al-Essawi was employed instead. One of the protestors, Mohammed Ibrahim Amin, said the high ranking officers are the beneficiaries of the current state, some receiving 6,000 EGP pay while others have their pay radically reduced. The demonstrators demanded their pays raised for the lowest ranking officers who actually deal with people on the street.
