Kurt De Buff, the representative of the liberal wing in the European Union Parliament, today condemned Britain's support of the Hosni Mubarak regime at the beginning of the January 25 Revolution. “Britain ignored many crimes committed by the former regime, like election fraud and corruption, and it hesitated to support the demonstrators in Tahrir Square,” De Buff said. “British hesitation was a result of the fear of al-Qaeda, the spread of chaos and violence and the undermining of relations with Arab states in the region,” he said during a meeting with Egyptian author Alaa al-Aswany. “There were also western fears that the whole Arab region would turn into a new Iran.” “Europeans have not viewed Egypt's revolution as a religious one because it aims to achieve justice and democracy,” he added. “Egyptians taught us history,” he said, adding that the people managed to achieve their objectives without foreign interference. The Tunisian revolution paved the way for change in the Arab region, he said, adding that the Egyptian revolution opened the door for change in the entire world.
