Member of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and commander of the Egyptian navy, Mohab Mimmeesh, said that Egypt would decline any international alliances to counter international piracy, unless the UN called to form an international force to counter piracy. "The UN's call will be a political one, and Egypt depends on Egyptian naval forces to secure our territorial waters and the Suez Canal, as no breach has taken place in the Egyptian waters,” he said. Mimmeesh said that the Egyptian Navy is qualified to carry out its combat role. He also said that the peace treaty with Israel did not obligate determine the kind of weapons the Egyptian Navy uses.
