NEW YORK: Permanent representative of Egypt to the UN in New York, ambassador Maged Abdel Fatah made a statement on behalf of the delegations of Non-Alignment Movement's countries on Wednesday October 12. The statement was made during a discussion session by the Security Council, headed by Nigerian FM, since Nigeria is taking over presidency of the Council in the current month of October. The discussions were about reforming the security sector and of strengthening peace and security in Africa. This discussion aims to contribute the formulation of an integrated vision on the role that can be played by the UN in supporting security sectors in foreign countries, especially in Africa. Maged Abdel Fatah assured the strong relation between peace, security and development. He stressed on the importance of addressing support by the international community to the procedures of reforming the security sector in foreign countries in conflict. He mentioned both problems of rates of unemployment and poverty and he stressed the role of the UN and how they should support efforts of developing these countries, by treating economic and social causes and helping them reach stability. “Non-alignment movement countries contribute with more than 80 percent of the total number of working individuals in the field of peacekeeping operations. The UN supports the efforts of nations in the field of reforming security sector in foreign countries,” Abdel Fatah said. He assured the principal of national ownership represents a corner stone in this field, by guaranteeing suitability of the submitted support by the international community for priorities with its national strategy in this field. He noted the important role which could be played by the peace building commission, which includes Egypt in its membership in coordination with international support.
