CAIRO: The Cairo Criminal Court in the Fifth Settlement, a Cairo suburb, today decided to detain former Minister of Information Anas al-Fiqi and former Head of Television and Radio Osama Sheikh. Al-Fiqi and el-|Sheikh served in his post and were removed from their positions for wasting public money from Egypt's media headquarters. Al-Fiqi was sentenced to jail for seven years while el-Shaikh is sentenced to five. The Court permitted Egyptian television cameras to broadcast the trial and the Court's ruling. The judge however cleared the courthouse of attendees except lawyers prior to announcing its ruling. Al-Fiqi and Sheikh are accused of wasting U.S. $1.89 million in union funds. Arabic here
