SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt: A Sharm el-Sheikh hotel owned by fugitive Egyptian businessman Hussein Salem won the award for best tourist resort for golf last weekend. Attendees at the World Tourism Awards festival, held at the Savoy Resort in Egypt's Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, were surprised the hotels owned by members of Egypt's former regime won the most awards at the festival. Jolie Ville, owned by Salem, won the award for best resort for gold. Salem is currently facing money laundering charges in Spain, where he fled in the wake of Egypt's January 25 Revolution. The two countries are discussing extraditing Salem to Egypt, as he faces more charges here. “The Best Tourist Resort for Golf award ensures the global rank of our resorts,” said Moataz Suleiman, the executive director of Jolie Ville. Suleiman also said the resort's administration is far away from its owners. “Hussein Salem is a member of general assembly of Jolie Ville and is not the only owner,” said Suleiman. Suleiman also said the Jolie Ville group manages another four resorts in Sharm Sheikh and employs a total of 2,500 workers. Abercrombie & Company won the best tour organizer in Africa. Amr Badr, a close relative of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's wife Suzanne, owns the company.
