CAIRO: The numbers of tourists visiting Egypt decreased during the second quarter of 2011 by 35.4 percent, recording a total of one million tourists. During the same period in 2010, Egypt received 3.5 million tourists. The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics issued a report today saying tourism in Egypt from April through June 2011 was still affected by the current political crisis. The report indicated that tourists coming from Eastern Europe were more affected by the events in Egypt. Their numbers decreased by 45.6 percent during the second quarter of 2011, while the numbers of tourists from western Europe decreased only 36.6 percent. The largest group of tourists to Egypt from April-June 2011 came from western Europe, totaling 42.4 percent. The tourists from Eastern Europe comprised 27.1 percent, other parts of the Middle East 17.7 percent and Africa 5.6 percent. The number of nights stayed by tourists also decreased, by 35.4 percent. In 2010, there were 33.7 nights stayed in Egypt during the second quarter of the year, while in 2011 there were only 21.8 million nights stayed.
