In a quick response to a “Youm 7" report on garbage lining the streets of Cairo Abdel Kawi Khalifa, the Governor of Cairo, met with the heads of waste management companies and gave them 72 hours to remove debris from the streets, and to implement the terms of their contracts, or risk legal action. The governor called upon of each company to provide quick solutions, like contracting with other companies to cover equipment and personnel deficits. Each company must submit a plan in the coming days for how they will remove trash from the streets. Khalifa said the problem arose because of financial problems faced by companies and equipment losses. Wednesday, the Ministry of Finance approved a decision to fund part of the costs to encourage companies to meet their contractual duties. The governor instructed local administration to require all private shops and restaurants with heavy waste output to provide containers to collect waste, and document the dates of trash pickup. The governor's four deputies and the heads of the cleaning companies attended the meeting.
