Facebook intends to launch its long-rumored music service with Spotify, MOG and Rdio this month, Mashable reported earlier today. The music and media platform will be announced at Facebook's F8 Developer Conference on September 22. Facebook will not directly host or stream any music or media; rather it will rely on its partners to provide the content, sources said. This design is in direct contrast to the strategy of direct hosting employed by Apple, Google and Amazon. Facebook's plan is to become a platform for media content the same way it is a platform for applications and games. Facebook will use Spotify, Rdio and MOG as partners. It is unclear right now whether or not Facebook has lined up other partners for the platform or whether the platform will be open to developers, but this option is predicted. Facebook's vision for this platform is to go beyond music – like streaming movies on the site. The F8 Conference will reveal the particulars.
