CAIRO: Egypt's al-Tagammu Party has called for creating a coalition of secular and liberal powers and excluding the Islamist powers. The socialist al-Tagammu criticized the Friday, July 29 demonstration in Tahrir Square. Initially named ‘Reunification Friday,' Egypt's Islamist powers attempted to dominate the square and directly violated agreements with secular and liberal groups regarding the day's demonstrations. Al-Tagammu and other secular groups saw this as an attempt to further divide Egyptians at this critical stage. In a statement, al-Tagammu demanded the members of the national coalition condemn the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Freedom and Justice Party, which is also a member of the coalition, in response to the Brotherhood's failure to follow through on its promises for the July 29 demonstration. Tagammu demanded the party apologize for calling for the establishment of a religious state during the demonstration, which violates the principles of the coalition. The statement underlined that the January 25 Revolution aimed to unify the nation, not to divide it. Finally, it said it is necessary to establish a coalition of democratic and liberal forces to aim at establishing a civil state that ensures the rights of every citizen through implementing the principles of citizenship and social justice.
