NORTH SINAI, Egypt: A mysterious explosion took place this morning in Sheikh Zowayed City in North Sinai, 12 kilometers from the Palestinian border. According to witnesses a huge noise resulted from the explosion but there were no casualties or damaged buildings. Security sources speculated that the explosion might be the result of Israeli fighters bombing the Gaza Strip or it could be a strong landmine in the desert. Local sources did not rule out the possibility that the explosion might have resulted from an Israeli experiment for a new weapon. The commander of North Sinai security, Gen. Saleh al-Masry, denied that the security had received any information about the mysterious explosion. According to certain sources, a plane that belongs to the Egyptian border guard corps combed the area close to the Mediterranean coast and the MFO's (Multinational Forces and Observers) airports, and the areas close to the gas exporting station.
