CAIRO: The judiciary panel scheduled to hear the case against those accused of perpetrating the ‘Battle of the Camels' assault on Tahrir Square has recused itself from the case. Head Judge Adel Abdel-Salam Gomaa recused himself from the case and submitted an apology to the Cairo Court of Appeal. Judge Osama el-Seidi, another member of the team, said the decision to recuse came because there are many cases the panel is asked to judge. The Cairo Court of Appeal had announced that the Battle of the Camel case would begin on August 20 before Gomaa. It is worth mentioning that Gomaa also recused himself from the case against former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak for murdering demonstrators. The ‘Battle of the Camel' refers to the February 2 attack on peaceful demonstrators in Tahrir Square by hired thugs wielding swords and sticks and riding horses and camels.
