CAIRO: The Sawy Culture Wheel will be holding a concert for the band Sehr-el Sharq, headed by musician Bilal Sheikh, next Thursday at 8pm. Sehr el-Sharq was formed in 2001 by Bilal Sheikh when he was a student at the Faculty of Music Education. The band is made up of his colleagues from college. The name of the band is based on the first song they played, 'Sehr el Sharq' (Magic of the East) which was composed by Abd el-Moneim el-Hariry. The band plays traditional Arabic music as well as their compositions inspired by traditional music. At one point, the band consisted of 27 members but then eventually this number came down to 7 to 10 members. Sehr el-Sharq has played in several places including culture centers in Alexandria and Cairo.
