CAIRO: Egyptian police are forbidden to enter Cairo's Tahrir Square today, said Mazhar Shaheen, the Imam of Omar Makram Mosque this morning. The violent clashes that took place in the iconic square – a major symbol of Egypt's revolution – on Tuesday, January 28 “make us recall the incidents of January 28, in which many people died and were injured as a result of the Ministry of Interior's violence against civilians and demonstrators,” said Shaheen. He added the main cause of Tuesday's incident was the decision to dissolve corrupt city councils across the country. He said corrupt figures triggered the violence because they lost their seats of power. Shaheen called upon all figures of the former regime to retreat back from carrying out their scheme to reverse the January 25 Revolution's success. Former head of the Office of the President Zakaria Azmi and Egyptian businessman and steel tycoon Ahmed Ezz will never achieve their plan, Shaheen continued. He said all protestors in Tahrir Square are “martyrs to be” and are ready to scarify themselves for Egypt. The revolution has been peaceful until now, said Shaheen, adding that corrupt figures should not drive Egyptians to use violence. He added that the demonstrators will sit in the forbidden area which will not witness killing or burning. He said the demonstrators will call for the prosecution of any policeman who enters the area.
