Ahmed Sarhan, a former officer in the State Security Investigations Service (SSI), announced he will run for the presidency. He has a complete electoral program and said he participated in the January 25 Revolution. Sarhan said he resigned from the SSI in 2001 because his vision opposed the painful reality and unfair actions of the SSI. During a press conference held at the Journalists Syndicate today, Sarhan said he had clashed with the former Minister of Internal Affairs and other leaders in the ministry, and for 10 years expected they would be imprisoned by a revolution of the youth. Sarhan pledged that if he became president, he would reduce the authorities of the position to being the president of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and the Supreme Council of the Police, because if a war broke out, he could control the situation through these two councils. He also said the judiciary would be fully independent during his presidency, and he would only preside over the meetings of the Council of Ministers. He added that he will reduce the number of republican guard to only 200 persons. Sarhan also emphasized that all the former president's supporters should be captured and tried because they are causing trouble among the people. He also said the Attorney General must be discharged because he was appointed by the former president.
