Political sociology professor Saad Eddin Ibrahim suggested replacing Article 2 of the Egyptian constitution. Article 2 states that Egypt is an Islamic state, its language is Arabic and Sharia – Islamic Law – is the main source of legislation. Another article states all monotheistic religions are the source of legislation in Egypt. "If given the chance to write the [19]71 Constitution, I would have never placed Article 2. But since it already occurred and the material is already developed, I suggest to modify and replace the phrase ‘all monotheistic religions,'" Ibrahim said. Ibrahim added that if he had to involve religion in politics he would allow all religions in the state to be represented and so religious pluralism of Egypt is represented through its legislation. He discussed his disapproval of Article 2 during a conference held on Monday evening at Sawy Culture Wheel. Article 2 has caused much debate in Egypt over the past few months between proponents and critics of the article.
