BEHERA, Egypt: The National Powers Coalition issued a statement condemning violations committed by police officers during a peaceful march against the Jewish celebrations of Abu Hasira in Behera governorate. Abu Hasira was a leading Moroccan-Jewish rabbi in the 19th century. He left his native country, Morocco, and embarked on a pilgrimage to Israel through Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. While passing through the Egyptian city of Damanhur, he grew ill and died. Abu Hasira was buried in the Nile Delta and his tomb became a pilgrimage site for Jews. Political representatives, along with the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), in Behera condemned police's use of thugs for ending the march last week. Supporters of leftist politician and presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabbahi and the movement ‘You'll never pass through my land' called for the march. All political powers expressed their displeasure about the former regime's style, which is still carried out by the police. Police violence was a main cause of the January 25 Revolution outbreak, according to the statement. The statement said those involved in police violation will be investigated and no political powers will defend them. The representatives wait for a tougher response from the chief of Behera police station. The statement said police violations are not allowed, hoping the prestige of the police force will return to respect the citizen and not use thugs after the January 25 Revolution.
