CAIRO: Egypt's Former Minister of Interior Habib al-Adly was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined 13 million EGP (U.S. $2.2 million) on Thursday. The Cairo Criminal Court, chaired by consultant al-Mohamadi Qunsowa, issued its verdict when investigations affirmed al-Adly was guilty of profiteering and money laundering. The case against al-Adly was filed to the General Prosecution by the Egyptian Money Laundering Combating Unit on February 12, the day after former President Hosni Mubarak's resignation. The unit discovered that the owner of a contracting company had deposited around 4.5 million EGP (U.S. $750,000) in al-Adly's account for facilitating illegal procedures in order for the company to take a house building tender for the Ministry of Interior. Al-Adly has also been charged with killing demonstrators during Egypt's January 25 Revolution, but that case has yet to go to trial. Arabic here.
