Mohamed Salah's Basel received a major blow to their UEFA Champions League group-stage hopes after losing at home to Cluj of Romania in the competition's playoff. The Swiss champions gave away a one-goal lead to lose 2-1 in the first-leg as they now must score more than once in Romania next week. Egypt forward Salah played the whole game as captain Marco Streller gave Basel a first-half lead, courtesy of a superb volley before the break. But Basel were stunned by a second-half brace from the visitors' Senegalese striker Modou Sougou, who scored twice in five minutes to turn the game around. Basel featured in the Champions League group-stage in the previous two editions, where they met Cluj twice.
