Sunderland had their Premiership winless run extended to eight games upon losing 3-1 to West Bromwich Albion Saturday in a match that saw an aerial challenge from Ahmed Elmohamady cause Nicky Shorey to score an own goal. Elmo, who was included in the Black Cats' starting line-up, rose to connect with a cross from Asamoah Gyan, only for his marker Shorey to head the ball into his own net. Peter Odemwingie brought the score level two minutes from the half-hour mark but Phil Bardsley put Sunderland ahead again three minutes later. The visitors overturned their one-goal deficit when Youssuf Mulumbu and Paul Scharner hit one apiece on 54 and 72 minutes respectively. Sunderland are not languishing in 13th place with 38 points, while West Bromwich lie 10th on 39.
