Germany outclassed a tame England side 4-1 to book their place in the World Cup quarter-finals. First-half goals from prolific duo Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski put Germany in front, before Matthew Upson pulled one back for England before half-time. A moment of controversy saw England's Frank Lampard denied a clear goal as Thomas Muller's brace after the break sealed a famous win for the Germans. Germany will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Mexico in the last eight. Action and controversy It was obvious from the start that the English defense was out of sorts as Mesut Ozil was sent through on goal after just five minutes, but David James saved. Klose broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when he followed a Manuel Neuer goal kick to outmuscle Upson and slide home past James. Jams denied another Klose goal before Podolski finished off a terrific team move to double Germany's lead on 33 minutes.
Lampard was unlucky Four minutes later, England received a lifeline through Upson, who imperiously jumped above Neuer to head in his second international goal, the first of which was also against Germany. Shortly after, England thought they had grabbed the dramatic equalizer, but were stunned by a dismal refereeing decision. Lampard's volley from 20 yards came off the underside of the bar and bounced way over the line, only for referee Jorge Larrionda and his assistant to wave play on. Muller double Seven minutes after the break, the crossbar denied Lampard one more time as England piled on the pressure in search for the equalizer. Another Lampard freekick seemed a decent chance, but hit the wall instead and Germany pounced on the counter to put the game to bed on 67 minutes. A super quick move saw Bastian Schweinsteiger thread a golden pass for Muller, who fired home for the third. Three minutes later, Muller did it again, this time from a closer range following another classy assist by Ozil.
