Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho won his first contest against his former club Chelsea, leading his side to a 2-1 home victory in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Wednesday. The Portuguese tactician helped Inter gain the upper hand in his first competitive meeting with Chelsea since leaving them in 2007. Argentina striker Diego Milito, who scored 14 goals in the Serie A, fired the hosts in front after three minutes. He cut inside Chelsea's central defender John Terry before beating keeper Petr Cech at the near post with a low shot. Chelsea piled on pressure afterwards and were unlucky not to level the score when Ivorian striker Didier Drogba rattled the crossbar with a powerful free kick. The English side were denied what looked a clear penalty just before the break when a last-man foul by Walter Samuel on Salomon Kalou prevented them from grabbing the equalizer. Ivorian forward Kalou made amends in the 51st minute when he curled a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area after being set up by Branislav Ivanovic. Chelsea's celebrations were cut short though, with Cambiasso restoring Inter's advantage four minutes later. The Argentinean midfielder's initial shot struck the body of Ivanovic but another fierce drive at the second attempt left the motionless Cech, who was substituted shortly after due to an injury, with no chance. The second leg will take place at Stamford Bridge on March 16.
