A goal from Dirk Kuyt earned Liverpool an unconvincing 1-0 home victory over Hungary's Debrecen in their Champions League group stage opener on Wednesday. The Dutch forward struck in the first-half's additional time as Liverpool, who were not at their best, got off to a winning start. Debrecen keeper Vukasin Poleksic blocked a Fernando Torres shot and Kuyt reacted quickly to score from the rebound. "We had some chances and didn't take them," Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez said after the game. "We put ourselves under pressure at the end, we couldn't score a second goal." In the other Group E encounter, French side Lyon needed a late goal from Miralem Pjanic to beat 10-man Fiorentina. Italian club Fiorentina had striker Alberto Gilardino dismissed just before the break for elbowing midfielder Jeremy Toulalan. Bosnia midfielder Pjanic made Lyon's numerical advantage count in the 76th minute with a close-range effort.
