Egypt's stunning 1-0 Confederations Cup victory over Italy proved that their brilliant display against Brazil was no fluke, according to coach Hassan Shehata. A first-half header from midfielder Mohamed Hommos handed the Pharaohs a historic win over the world champions in Thursday's tie at Ellis Park. The victory followed a cruel 4-3 defeat to Brazil that came courtesy of a last-gasp penalty from Kaka. "We showed tonight that our performance against Brazil wasn't accidental," Shehata told Egyptian Radio following the match. Egypt, who claimed their first ever victory in FIFA tournaments, moved to third spot in Group B with three points, behind second-placed Italy on goal difference. They take on the United States, who have no points, in their last group-stage encounter on Sunday while Italy face Brazil. All four teams still have a chance to book a last-four berth. "We will face the United States with an eye on a semi-final spot. We hope to reach the next round," Shehata added. Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak phoned Shehata after the game to congratulate him after the African champions shook world football. "I dedicate this victory to president Mubarak and all Egyptian people," Shehata, who will turn 60 years on Friday, concluded.
