Real Madrid withdrew an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), regarding the eligibility of their new signings to play in the UEFA Champions League. Los Merengues completed the transfer of midfielder Lassana Diarra and striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who both participated in the UEFA Cup earlier in the season. However, UEFA regulations deny clubs from registering more than one player who played in the UEFA Cup to take part in the Champions League within the same season. According to UEFA's official website, the Spanish giants withdrew their appeal after acting president Vicente Boluda discussed the matter with UEFA chief Michel Platini. "Platini and Boluda met last Thursday to discuss the appeal regarding the registration of Huntelaar and Diarra for the knockout phase of the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League," read a UEFA statement. "Following the meeting, and upon the invitation of the UEFA President to reconsider their position, Real Madrid decided to withdraw the appeal and to accept UEFA's decision that only one player can be registered." Now it looks likely that Diarra will take the nod and be registered ahead of Huntelaar, as the former already guaranteed a regular spot with some solid displays in midfield.
