VIENNA, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Italy suffered a new defensive setback on Thursday as Andrea Barzagli set to miss the remainder of EURO 2008 due to a knee injury. The 27-year-old, who sustained the injury in training prior to Sunday's quarterfinal clash against Group D winners Spain in the Ernst Happel of Vienna, will undergo an operation on his knee. "The Euros are over for Andrea Barzagli," confirmed a team spokesman at Italy's training base in Moedling, Austria. "The defender, injured in training today, immediately underwent checks which showed a tear in the meniscus of the left knee. "The player has expressed a desire to stay with the squad but in the coming days he will have an operation," added the statement of Italian Football Federation. His withdrawal from the tournament has been another blow to coach Roberto Donadoni following the loss of captain Fabio Cannavaro due to ruptured ligaments before the Austria and Switzerland event kicked off. Barzagli, in the process of moving from Palermo to Germany's VfL Wolfsburg, started the 3-0 defeat by the Dutch in Italy's opening Group C game but was dropped for the 1-1 draw with Romania and 2-0 win over France. Skipper Cannavaro sustained his ligaments injury in Italy's first training session in Austria early this month. He was also operated on and decided to stay with the squad to offer support.
