A late salvo from Wayne Rooney earned Manchester United a 2-1 victory over brave Portsmouth and sent the Red Devils to the fifth round of the FA Cup. The English international tucked home from two meters in the 77th minute after being set-up by Ryan Giggs' low cross. Rooney widened the gap six minutes later when he beat Portsmouth's advanced goalie David James with a wicked lob from the edge of the area. Nigerian striker Nwankwo Kanu gave the visitors hope when his deflected shot floated into the back of the net three minutes from time but it was too late to grab an equalizer.
