Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has spoken out against using Stadio Olimpico in Rome as a permanent venue for the team who traditionally travel to various cities. "I don't think it would be a workable idea," Cannavaro was quoted as saying by Calcio Italia magazine on Monday. After Saturday's 2-0 victory over Ukraine in Euro 2008 qualifiers at the stadium was attended by 60,000 people, the Italian Olympic Committee had come forward proposing making the Olimpico a static home venue. Despite the overwhelming crowds, Cannavaro insisted that choosing a single venue would be disrespectful to fans throughout the country. "It just wouldn't be right to use the Stadio Olimpico out of respect for the other towns and cities in the country," added the Real Madrid defender. "After all, how can the fans in Reggio Calabria for example be expected to reach the capital every time an international is on?" For him, the sheer vastness of the country is reason enough for the team to continue to travel. "You can't compare us to other nations, especially as some countries are only 200km in length," he concluded.
