World number one Roger Federer overcame a stern Fabrice Santoro in the second round of the Qatar Open on Wednesday as he survived two tiebreak sets to advance to the quarterfinals. The Swiss ace, who won the title in 2005, beat Santoro 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5) and will next take on Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus who upset eighth-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-1, 3-6, 7-5. Meanwhile, former world number two, Tommy Haas of Germany ended Tim Henman's campaign in Doha as he ousted the Briton in straight sets to set up a last-eight meeting against Mikhail Youzhny. Henman, whose 2005 season was plagued with injuries, slipped to number 36 in the world rankings and was looking to mark a successful comeback in Qatar especially after he eliminated third-seeded Richard Gasquet in the first round. Other second round action on Wednesday saw second-seeded Russian, Nikolay Davydenko defeating Czech Republic's Robin Vik 6-3, 6-4 to get within one win from reaching his second consecutive semifinal in Doha. The Russian world number five will face Italy's Filippo Volandri in the quarterfinals.
