Police and shop owners opposed to a decree by the Governor of Cairo ordering the transfer of el-Tonsi market, which was burnt to the ground on Tuesday, clashed on Thursday when demonstrators threw rocks at the security troops, the opposition Al-Ahrar newspaper reported Friday. The anti-riot police pushed back some 70 protesters who threw rocks and sought to enter the market site by force. Reinforcements had to be called in to calm the situation as protesters demonstrated against the Governor's decree and demanded the Government to re-build their shops in the same area after the fire. Police arrested about a dozen protesters.
