AS the Press Syndicate's Freedoms Committee was holding a press conference in solidarity with a man allegedly tortured to death by police in the coastal city of Alexandria earlier this month, protesters outside the independent union in central Cairo held up posters of the victim (pictured), as they demanded his alleged abusers be brought to justice. They called for Interior Minister Habib el-Adly to resign, as reported incidents of torture have been on the increase. Protesters raised banners that read: 'You, policemen, will never get away with it'. "We urge all free Egyptians who love their country to join in a demonstration against torture in el-Tahrir Square on Sunday [today]," one of the protesters said. Khaled Saeed died on June 6 in Alexandria. The police said he had swallowed a bag containing drugs, which killed him. However, his relatives and some eyewitnesses said two detectives had beaten him to death. The Prosecutor General has ordered a new autopsy on his body. The results are expected on Sunday.
