Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit on Wednesday held talks with a visiting UN delegation on the human rights situation in the Gaza Strip under the tight Israeli siege. During the meeting, Abul Gheit reviewed the current difficult situation facing the Palestinian people in Gaza under the Israeli blockade, said Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki in a press release on Wednesday. The delegation led by Palitha Kohona, head of the UN special committee investigating Israeli practices affecting human rights of the Palestinian people, conveyed to the top Egyptian diplomat the panel's assessment of the current situation in the Palestinian territories. Abul Gheit also posted the delegation on efforts exerted by Egypt to put an end to the current crisis in the seaside enclave, added the spokesman. The UN commission was formed in 1968 in accordance with a UN General Assembly resolution to probe human rights in the occupied Arab territories including the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.
