AL-AZHAR pledges to defend the rights of women and children and exert more efforts to improve the status of the Egyptian family, the chief of Sunni Islam's most prestigious institution said on Friday. During his meeting with the Family and Population Minister Mushira Khattab, Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb said that Al-Azhar would do whatever it can to combat the threats and dangers facing the Egyptian family and society through a moderate religious discourse. Sheikh el-Tayyeb also said that Al- Azhar supported all the Ministry's efforts in combating negative social problems such as domestic violence, child labour, FGM (female genital mutilation), and population growth, which hinder social and economic development in Egypt.
