The perfect companion: netbook or notebook?
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 16 - 03 - 2010

SIZE is a very important factor in one's life. If it is a diamond, the bigger the better, if a dress the smaller the better " Size is the parameter on which things are generally judged. So where does technology fit in this messy matrix?
Intel's latest range of processors offers enhanced visual displays and an expanded wireless ecosystem, important to anyone who uses the Internet for business and pleasure. The price of a transistor in the newest chip family is about one million the average price of a transistor in 1968. If car prices fell at the same rate, a new car today would cost about one cent!
Like clothes, diamonds and cars, computers also have a perfect fit. A fit that suits one's needs and maybe even one's handbag! The wide range of products in the market is confusing and really does not help the consumer know which to add in his shopping basket " hence below is a simple differentiation on what really suits his needs.
One may ask the question: Am I going on a road trip and I want to stay connected, what is my perfect fit? If one is onthe go and wants to stay in touch with friends and loved then, his perfect fit is the netbook.
Any netbook is one's Internet companion! netbooks are lightweight, compact, portable Internet connectivity mean that has great battery life.
Netbooks' increased portability and convenience in size that makes them fit into a modestly sized handbag or briefcase with all the other paraphernalia of a busy working person yet offer full functionality to the user.
So basically, now the Internet comes in a smaller, sleeker, more convenient package of a netbook powered by the incredibly small, amazingly smart processors! With its energy smart designs netbooks' functions vary from accessing e-mail, the web, news, chat, videos, photos and music wherever its user goes and all while packing light!
Once again it is the advances in technology and the drive for efficiency that have opened the way for a whole new way of thinking about portable Internet power. Intel, probably the most recognisable name in computer chip technology, is leading the way. Ultra thin chips with low battery consumption and heat output allow designers to reduce the physical size of the computer case and the battery while maintaining performance.
If the case is “I prefer working outside and downloading a lot of data, what is my fit?!” Well if one really needs his storage space or even if the user is a regular Joe that downloads a lot of movies, his perfect fit would be a notebook! A notebook is almost a regular PC but in a small package. With a hard drive that gives enormous storage space and the ability to multi-function. Notebook computers are small personal computers designed for using on the move. notebooks usually have all the functions of a desktop computer but are portable spacesavers.
There are many benefits to using a notebook. Just like a netbook is an onthe- go easy to carry device so is one's notebook! A notebook can be used anywhere which means one can manage his time more productively. Having a notebook means having instant access to information, whether it is from files previously saved on the hard drive or off of the Internet. Notebooks are small computers which is great when space is at a minimum. When not in use, a notebook can be closed and put away in a small space.
A perfect conclusion would be: one's best fit is what suits his needs the most. If a user's only requirementsare staying online and having a small, portable device that looks cool then go with the netbook. If one's job, school work or one just needs that extra storage space, then best guess is to go with the notebook. But what if one needs both? Who cares, it's high time to throw the one-size-fits-all concept. Both the netbook and the laptop complement each other " absolutely no harm in owning both.
