Agony Aunt A chain of nothingness!
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 13 - 11 - 2012

Dear Aunt Bahia,
I have no interest in any thing. Even while writing to you, I already know you won't reply. Even if you did I probably wouldn't see it, since I don't buy your newspaper or any other papers on a regular basis. I'm not interested in the world or the news. I'm just writing to you for fun, although nothing will bring fun to me. I'm a woman in her 30s. I lost everybody I knew in this world. I live with my laptop in an apartment, which my parents left me. I have nothing to do in my life, no work, no friends, no husband, nothing.
My uncle, whom I see once a year, regularly sends me some money, otherwise I don't know anybody. I rarely go out; when I need something I ask the doorman to get it, as I'm not interested in going out or speaking with people. My life is a long chain of nothingness. I don't even want to change my life. I feel fine. I just want to tell my uncle and the neighbours: LEAVE ME ALONE!!! Don't bother with a reply, I won't read it.
Me
Dear You,
Open your heart to life, there are many things that deserve to be experienced. Have you tried fried ice-cream?! You should. Find a nearby restaurant that serves this delicious dessert. Learn something new, with the help of your laptop and an online course.
Have you ever dressed in baby blue mixed with pale pink? It's great and suits all skin colours. Have you got my point? It's better to do some nonsense than remaining in your nothingness. By the way, I'm sure you'll read this! You are welcome any time.

Mother hates my fiancée
Dear Aunt,
For two years I have been engaged to a wonderful girl and I love her so much. The problem is that my mother doesn't like her and says she is not beautiful and I shouldn't marry her.
My mother always hurts me with her harsh words; she also treats my fiancée quite badly. What should I do, leave her because she is not pretty? To tell you the truth I like her character and spirit. Tell me please what to do!
Confused man
Dear man,
It's your life. You choose! Remember you are the only person who will live with this wife-to-be. You should ask yourself, is she the one who will make you happy? Don't let your mother influence your decision. If your mother only objects to your fiancée because she is not pretty, then think twice before leaving her.

Dad's affair
Dear Aunt,
I'm a girl of 20 and have a great problem. I don't know how to react. We are a small family (just my parents and me). My mother is a typical Egyptian woman who puts her family first. Some days ago, I caught my father cheating on her with another woman.
When I confronted him, he denied everything and shouted at me. I thought of leaving the house but I can't abandon my mother. I don't know what kind of relationship my father and that woman have, whether it is love or something else. But I'm sure this affair will ruin our home. Please tell me what to do!
Depressed girl
Dear girl,
Don't confront him with what you know. Treat him as if nothing had happened. Don't fight for your mother or think of leaving the house. You could try to be closer to him. Involve him in your life, tell him your problems and ask for his advice.
Let him feel the warmth of family life. In my opinion, the first reason that could have pushed him to cheat on your mother is the lack of this warmth. Maybe you and your mother forgot, in your busy lives, to think of him and his needs. So he looked for some other person to think of him. Your role now is to bring him back.
Don't tell your mother, she may not forgive him. Try to organise a family outing and give your whole attention to your father. Let him see you as if he were seeing you for the first time. Give him a new taste of life. Believe me, it will work. Please keep me posted!
