CAIRO - Egypt is maintaining its lead in the medals table on the eight day of the 2011 Arab Games that run from December 9-23) in the oil-rich Gulf city of Doha, Qatar. The Egyptian athletes have now 130 medals - 54 gold, 44 silver and 33 bronze. Qatar is second with 70 medals, (25 gold, 23 silver and 22 bronze), while Tunisia is on third place with 47 medals (21 gold, 10 silver and 16 bronze), Morocco is fourth with 58 medals (12 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze) and Saudi Arabia on fifth place with 32 medals (9 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze). Qatar is hosting the 12th edition of the games ahead of the 2022 Football World Cup, which will also be held in this Gulf State.
Several medals for Taekwondo Egypt's Taekwondo players snatched three medals, one gold, one silver and one bronze at the 2011 Arab Games. Tamer Baioumi grabbed the gold medal in the men's 58kg individual competition, while Libya's Mohamed Telish scooped the silver medal and Qatari Mohamed Daher and Yemeni Yasser Moterif shared the third place, each picking up bronze. Morocco's Taekwondo player Essam el-Sharnoubi grabbed the gold medal in the men's 80kg, while Jordan's Nabil Hassan came second and Egyptian Mahmoud Saied and Qatari Mohamed Daher shared the third place. In the women's 67kg individual competition, Jordan's Nancy Abu Badr grabbed the gold medal, while Egypt's Hend Moustafa came second and Morocco's Hakima el-Meslhi and Sudanese Miriam Mahmoud shared the third place. In the women's 46kg competition, Egypt's Aya Ali got the gold medal, Jordan's Christina scooped silver and Tunisia's Fadia el-Farhani and Morocco's Naiema Nader shared bronze. Weightlifting domination Egyptian weightlifters took over the weightlifting competitions at the 2011 Arab Games. Egypt's Nahla Ramadan snatched gold in the women's +75kg competition while Algerian Thouria came second and Jordan's Rolla Mohamed was third. In the women's 75kg competition, Egypt's Abeer Khalil scooped gold, Sudanese Mahassen Mohamed came second and Yasmin Abbas from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was third. In the men's 69kg competition, Egypt's Mohamed Abdel Baki grabbed the gold medal. In the men's 62kg competition, Iraqi's Karar Mohamed snatched gold, Egyptian Ahmed Saad came second and the bronze medal went to Iraqi Mohamed Ali. Gold for table tennis Egypt won gold in both the women and men's table tennis competitions. Egypt's Omar el-Asaar defeated his Saudi counterpart 4-2 and qualified for the final of the individuals' competition. The Egyptian team beat its Saudi Arabia counterpart 3-1 in the final, with el-Sayyed Lasheen stunning his Saudi counterpart Naief el-Gedei 13-11, 11-9, 11-13, 11-6. Before this, the Egyptian team beat its Bahraini counterpart 3-1. In the women's competition, the Egyptian team defeated Tunisia 3-0. Egypt's Dina Misherf defeated Tunisia's Safaa Sadani 5-11, 11-9, 311, 11-9, 11-3, while Egypt's Sarah Hassan also beat Tunisia's Sarah Bin Ali el-Salmi, 9-11, 11-2, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4.
