CAIRO - The 10th World Wind Energy Conference (WWEC 2011) and Renewable Energy Exhibition kick off Monday at the Arab League premises in Cairo. The international conference, which promotes the development of wind energy throughout the world, is taking place this year for the first time in North Africa, while it is the second occasion in the African continent. Running until November 2, WWEC 2011 is being held this year with the theme of “Greening Energy: Converting Deserts into Power Houses,” Galal Osman, president of the Egyptian Wind Association, stated: "WWEC 2011 sets a platform for all the major players in the field of wind energy technologies, industry leaders, stakeholders, investors, policy-makers and government officials." Osman added that the conference will present the latest technologies, services and policies for wind energy and renewable energies in general, as well as local and regional energy planning. Osman said that the focus of this year would be on harvesting the abundance of renewable energy in the deserts of this world and thus converting deserts into powerhouses. The Arab League, the German Federation Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, the Egyptian Ministries of Foreign Trade and Industry and of Electricity and Energy are supporting WWEC 2011. Moreover, support is being provided from the EU through its investment in the Med project, and All EuroMed business associations through the Med Alliance.
