CAIRO - The Cairo Court of Appeals endorsed a memorandum by a two-member panel from the Ministry of Justice demanding the revelation of secret bank accounts of 75 NGOs and 40 individuals. Justice Minister Mohamed Abdel-Aziz el-Guindi had asked the court to put forward two magistrates to investigate financial resources of some civil society organisations and persons suspected of receiving foreign funds in violation of the law on NGOs financing. The law does not prevent the NGOs from receiving funding from abroad. But, it requires them to register with the Government, and for all funds to be approved by the Ministry of Social Solidarity. Investigations revealed that some NGOs and civil society figures had received foreign funding worth LE1 billion (more than $167 million) over six months.
