CAIRO - Egyptians are being encouraged to hand in firearms that were stolen from police stations during the lawlessness that prevailed nationwide in the wake of the toppling of president Mubarak in February. People in possession of such stolen firearms will be offered licences for guns ‘for self-defence', once they have submitted them, with no legal liability or questions asked, according to a decision taken yesterday by Interior Minister Mansour el-Eissawi. The Ministry has urged all Egyptians to co-operate with this initiative, to make the country safer and more stable. For more information, please ring the Ministry on (02) 2488-4500 or (02) 2488-8888. Lawlessness has prevailed in Egypt in the wake of the recent revolution, especially after the police withdrew from the streets on January 28, one of the bloodiest days of the revolt. Dozens of police stations were attacked by the people and thousands of firearms stolen.
