Editorial: Syrians sacrificed
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 05 - 08 - 2011

Does the Syrian President think that he can continue slaughtering his people with impunity? Is Bashar al-Assad blind and stupid? Can't he see that he's pulling down his regime and his country?
Despite the repeated failure of the use of violence against the unarmed civilians who have revolted in different Arab countries, requesting political change, more freedom and respect for human rights, Al-Assad insists on imitating his late father by using excessive violence against the opposition.
While getting ready to welcome the holy fasting month of Ramadan, the Muslim community and indeed the whole world was shocked when around 150 citizens were massacred in Hama.
This same city was subjected to an even more shocking massacre by Hafez Al-Assad in 1982. It was one of the worst massacres in the history of the Middle East. Tens of thousands of people were slaughtered.
Al-Assad, who came to power when his father died 11 years ago, claims that the ongoing strikes and demonstrations in Syria are all a foreign plot being implemented by some thugs.
He even congratulated his army for the 'successful' operation in Hama!
Shamefully, the Arab League hasn't issued a single statement condemning the bloodbath caused by the Syrian Army. How can it do so, while its new Secretary-General, Nabil el-Arabi, stated after a visit to Damascus that no-one can remove the legitimacy of any regime?
The Arab diplomat, who has angered many Syrians by his bias towards Bashar's regime, has forgotten that any regime loses its legitimacy when it starts killing the public opposition.
The Arabs, some busy with their revolutions and others afraid of the possibility of more revolutions, continue to turn a deaf ear to the Syrians' plight.
Meanwhile, the Western world, still involved in its military operation against the Libyan regime, has announced that it will not interfere, militarily, in Syria, either because it doesn't have oil or because these countries, including the US, are going through a chronic economic crisis.
Therefore, the Syrians will continue sacrificing their precious blood to end the totalitarian regime of Al-Assad, who will, when he falls, face charges of war crimes.
