CAIRO (Updated) - After being temporarily remanded for 15 day over illicit gains, Safwat el-Sherif, the former secretary-general of the formerly ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), was quizzed yesterday over his involvement in what was dubbed in the local media as ‘the Camel Battle'. "El-Sherif is interrogated over being involved in ordering NDP supporters to attack peaceful protesters in Al Tahrir Square on February 2," a judicial source said. He added that the questioning of el-Sherif would last for some days as media gag was ordered on the investigations. Sherif was detained late on Monday for 15 days "on charges of misusing public funds", official TV said, as footage showed Sherif – his face covered by a jacket – being escorted into a police vehicle. Meanwhile, Ahmed Fathi Sorour, the Speaker of the People's Assembly (the Lower House of Egypt's Parliament), is due to be questioned today on illicit gains as his assets, those of his two wives and sons were all frozen. "Sorour would be questioned on the sources of his swollen wealth. He could be jailed in case he did not have documents about the sources of his property and funds," a legal source said.
