CAIRO - A military tribunal has sentenced six people to between three and five years in jail for their part in riots and subversive activities which occurred in the capital area over the past few days, a statement said. The court found the six defendants, all of them are male civilians, guilty of committing criminal acts punishable by law, the statement, issued by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, said. The court, which allows no appeal against its rulings, found the six people guilty of a range of offences including thuggery, arson, theft, destruction of public property and possessing weapons, it added. The defendants, whose names, ages, or occupations have not been disclosed, were sentenced to between three to five years in prison, the statement said. In a separate case, the court has sentenced 13 ex-policemen to five years in prison each after they were convicted of holding an illegal assembly and setting a Government-owned building ablaze on Thursday. The 13 men were found guilty of torching the Police Officers' Personnel Affairs Building, which is adjacent to the Interior Ministry Building in Lazoghli Square in central Cairo, the statement said. The defendants were convicted of "deliberately" committing an arson crime that burnt a Government-owned property and exposing workers to danger, the statement said.
