CAIRO - EGYPT has completed all preparations for an Arab economic summit scheduled on January 19 in the Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh, an official said on Tuseday. “All Arab countries will send highprofile delegations. It will follow up results of the previous summit in Kuwait last year,” said Mohamed el-Oraby, an assistant to Egypt's Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs. “The summit will focus on small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) as they are the driving force for development in the Arab world. It will also tackle problems of Arab young people, who account for nearly half of the Arab population,” el-Oraby said. “Forums for businesspeople and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) will be launched during the summit,” he noted. The summit is expected to discuss boosting infrastructure projects in the Arab countries, particularly in the telecommunication and transport sectors to push inter- Arab trade, according to el-Oraby. “Linking Arab countries by railway projects and maritime routes will bolster trade and investment,” he added. The first Arab economic summit was held in Kuwait two years ago.
