SHARM EL-SHEIKH - South Sinai Governor Abdul Fadil Shousha Wednesday banned diving off a number of hotels in Sharm el-Sheikh with the exception of six regions. Governor Shousha decreed that the divers and snorkellers would be banned from practising the sport off hotels, except for the areas of Neemaa Bay, Nabaq Protectorate, Ras Umm el-Sayyed, el-Qirsh (Shark) Bay, Ras Gamila, and Ras Nassrani. He ordered that the divers be taken into the sea by equipped boats with the company of a diving or snorkelling expert each. "But they (divers and snorkellers) should not be allowed to wade through the water off the beaches facing the hotels," the Governor's decree said, adding that he allowed offshore diving in Dahab and Nuweibaa for tourists. The measure comes after a series of shark attacks on tourists off Sharm el-Sheikh that had triggered a flurry of speculations as to what could have caused them. The Government has invited international experts to help locate the killer shark but officials were at loss as to what could have caused its behaviour. Local diving experts said single shark attacks are extremely rare in the area and were mystified as to why so many people were attacked in such quick succession. Diving club owners and experts said that although they would obey Shousha's decree, they did not understand why he had issued it now that no single shark attack has occurred recently.
