GIZA - A criminal court in Giza Saturday postponed until December 18 the trial of Hamdi Qandil, a veteran media personality, in a libel suit filed against him by Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit. The prosecutor demanded in Saturday's session hearing, the first, that the toughest punishment be meted out to Qandil, who denied charges. Minister Abul Gheit has accused Qandil of slandering him in an article he published in a privately owned newspaper. Around 11 lawyers and scores of political activists appeared at the courtroom Saturday in support of Qandil, who is a vociferous opponent of the Government.
