CAIRO - Israeli President Shimon Peres was in Cairo Sunday for talks with his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak that would focus on the Israeli Palestinian peace process, Egyptian officials said. Peres' visit came days after the Arab League authorised the Palestinian leadership to engage in direct talks with Israel, but only if key conditions were met, including a clear timeframe and the establishment of a monitoring unit. Previously, the grouping had only supported the US-backed indirect, or so-called proximity talks between the Jewish State and the Palestinians.
