CAIRO, August 7, 2018 -- The Ministry of Public Enterprises said on Tuesday that it had launched short-term and long-term plans for developing the government-run spinning and weaving and garment factories nationwide. The plans were based on a detailed study that had been done by the Ministry to determine what had impeded thoseindustries. The government-owned Cotton, Textile, Weaving and Ready-to-Wear Clothes Company is in charge of running the facilities, where the plans would be carried out. This, moreover, would be done in full co-ordination with the Ministries of Industry and Agriculture, a statement quoted Public Enterprise Minister Hisham Tawfiq as saying. The short-term plan involves improving the quality of Egyptian long-staple cotton brands and providing the cotton spinning mills, which are located throughout the country, with modern machines and well-trained workers to produce high-quality yarns, the statement said. It said that the plan would reduce the number of government-owned cotton mills from 25 to 11 plants that would have modern spinning machines. The plan also calls for restructuring the money-losing textile and weaving factories and supplying them with new managers as well as training workers on how to operate modern machines and equipment, the statement said. The long-term plan involves providing thegovernment-run garment factories with modern machines, well trained workers and new production lines. It also calls for encouraging private capital owners to launch joint textile and weaving business ventures with the government, the statement said, adding the Ministry of Public Enterprises had earmarked LE1 billion for carrying out the plans.
