JOHANNESBURG - Uruguay ended Ghana's dream of being the first African team in the World Cup semi-finals when they won a penalty shootout 4-2 after their quarter-final finished 1-1 at the end of extra time on Friday. Uruguay goalie Fernando Muslera saved two spot kicks from John Mensah and Dominic Adiyah in the shootout. In a dramatic finish to extra time, Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan missed the perfect chance to send his team through when he hit the bar with a penalty after Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez was sent off for saving a certain goal by handling on his goal line. Sulley Muntari gave the Ghanaians the lead on the stroke of halftime with a powerful shot from more than 30 metres. Uruguay striker Diego Forlan equalised direct from a free kick in the 55th minute. In the semi-finals, the winners will meet Netherlands, who shocked Brazil 2-1 earlier in Port Elizabeth.
